May 7, 2001 - 2nd Edition coming soon – summary of enhancements
Fedhealth is planning to release the 2nd Edition of "IT’S A DISASTER! …and what are YOU gonna do about it?" in the coming months. The following summarizes the additions and revisions to the original 176-page manual (listed in the order they will appear)…
-- Making overall book more generic for Americans & Canadians (i.e. added metric, etc.)
-- Adding in 2000 & 2001 disaster statistics Inserting Canadian Red Cross contact information & programs
-- Including information on "avalanches" with "landslides & mudflows" section (info provided by American & Canadian Avalanche Associations, the U.S. Forest Svc, the National Snow & Ice Data Center in Boulder, etc.)
-- Inserting an entire "Mitigation section" for consumers and summarized some "mitigation strategies" for businesses & consumers (e.g. wind, hail, etc. provided by FEMA Project Impact, Emergency Preparedness Canada [now OCIPEP], Insurance Bureau of Canada, Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction, etc.)
-- Adding FEMA Regional Contact list
-- Updating U.S. State Emergency Management Offices (changes ph#s, URLs, addresses, etc.)
-- Updating and expanding the former Emergency Preparedness Canada data to reflect the new Office of Critical Infrastructure Protection and Emergency Preparedness (OCIPEP) information and updating some Provincial EMOs
-- Inserting two sections for businesses to learn more about FEMA’s Project Impact ("Appendix A") and OCIPEP’s Safe Guard ("Appendix B")
-- Inserting "Appendix C" contributed by a County Emergency Management Office describing "A County Emergency Preparedness Terrorism Emergency Operations Outline - Counteractions Standard Operations Guide" for any U.S. county to use as a guideline on "Weapons of Mass Destruction"
-- Adding more "Additional Resources & Web sites" including all contributors, Canadian Centre for Emergency Preparedness, DRIE, American & Canadian Avalanche Assoc., etc.
-- Doing miscellaneous cosmetic improvements throughout
Added 36 pages – 2nd Edition now will have 212 pages total. Estimated availability is late-June / early-July 2001 so please check back for updates!
