August 5, 2007 - New Appendix about nukes in revised 4th Edition

A revised version of "IT'S A DISASTER! ..." will begin shipping on 8/6/2007 with a new Appendix called "More About Nukes (You CAN Survive...)".

With all the chatter about nukes recently, people need to learn how to protect themselves from dangerous fallout in the event terrorists try to hit U.S. soil with a small device. Nuclear incidents (like an emergency at a power plant) and dirty bombs are already covered in the NUCLEAR and TERRORISM topics respectively.

This new 13-page Appendix explains small nuclear devices in general (like 1-kiloton to 1-megaton size) and has suggestions on what people can do to prepare for the unthinkable.

For decades, movies and some in the media have portrayed a nuclear attack as a "doomsday" event implying most people would be killed on impact ... and survivors would want to die once they come out of their shelters. In reality, unless you are actually at ground zero or within a several mile radius of the blast zone (depending on the size of the nuke, of course), there is a very high probability you will survive as long as you limit your exposure to the radiation, take shelter with proper shielding, and wait for the most dangerous radioactive materials to decay. About 80% of fallout occurs within 24 hours and most fallout loses its strength quickly so the more time that passes after the attack, the lower the danger.

In other words, you CAN survive a nuke attack ... but you MUST make an effort to learn what to do before, during and after a nuclear crisis.

And .. if more people learn what to do, it could alleviate some fear, anxiety and stress on our nation.

Some resources used to develop this Appendix include several FEMA Civil Defense documents from the 1970s and 1980s, a book by the U.S. Dept of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory (published by Oregon Institute of Science and Medicine), and papers by the CDC, Physicians for Civil Defense and others.
