January 20, 2009 - Preparedness during an economic downturn The last thing people want to think about during these tough economic times is how to prepare for a natural or man-made disaster. However, since many states and cities are facing major cutbacks to First Responders it is more important than ever for businesses and consumers to know what they should plan for and do during an emergency situation.
Commentary by Bill & Janet Liebsch
No matter where you live there is a chance some type of emergency or disaster can (or at some time will) occur. The question is … what are YOU gonna do about it?
According to The Ad Council, 91 percent of Americans said it is important to be prepared for emergencies but only 55 percent have actually taken steps to prepare.
"IT'S A DISASTER!... and what are YOU gonna do about it?" helps families and businesses "be aware, be prepared, and have a plan" for most types of emergencies and disasters. The 284-page paperback provides quick-reference instructional bullets in 2-color format. It is not written to alarm people, rather it suggests tips on what folks should think about and do before, during and after specific types of scenarios, as well as how to administer basic first aid.
The disaster and first aid topics are sorted alphabetically and the speed index makes it easy for readers to find a key word quickly. Plus the paperback size makes it convenient to store in a kit, backpack, desk drawer or glove box.
And yes, there is a lot of information in the book … possibly more than the average person may want to read, but it's a handy reference tool. We believe if more people take responsibility and learn what to do before the unexpected happens ~ it could alleviate some problems, fear and stress on our First Responders, nation and ourselves.
For almost 10 years IT’S A DISASTER! has been available through normal distributors and retailers like Baker & Taylor, Amazon.com and others, but they don’t have a system in place to pass through discounts to end users. So we have been quietly offering the title discounted in bulk direct to government agencies, businesses and organizations and now have hundreds of thousands of copies in print. And we customize books at no charge (in the print process or with peel & stick labels) so groups can convey their special messages and other safety information to their employees, customers and local communities.
Since we are the authors and publishers we’re able to keep our costs down and provide a quality customizable product for 50% - 89% off the $14.99 list … and still donate millions in cash and match to First Responders and nonprofits around the country.
Our goal is to help government, businesses, civic clubs, faith-based groups, nonprofits and youth groups work together and make preparedness a community-wide initiative while helping fund many volunteers’ on-going efforts.
For example, our discounted pricing and other donated services we provide helps agencies and nonprofits gain access to additional dollars with the matching grants programs. And some groups have sold ads inside books and collected cash or lines of credit and they keep all those resources since we print the ads for free. Others have asked local businesses to sponsor a purchase and we help acknowledge them by including their names in print.
We’ve even got a program where media and bloggers can help us spread the word and we'll donate 10% - 30% of all orders to fund local Disaster Relief or the nonprofit group of that paper or web site’s choosing.
So again, during this time of economic slowdown where budgets are tightening and donations are dropping, keep in mind there is a "tool" that exists that can help your communities prepare for the unexpected and be a creative fundraiser at the same time.
We want to get this book in every home and business in our country and will continue to explore new and innovative ways to help our country "be aware, be prepared, and have a plan".
