August 26, 2009 - 8 years since 9/11 … NEVER FORGET

As we approach the 8th anniversary of the 9/11 attack on our country, we ask everyone to please take some time to reflect on how that event impacted our nation and ask yourself … are you and your loved ones prepared if we are attacked again?

Although it was a traumatic, devastating blow to our psyche, economy and confidence, we pulled through it. People often forget terrorist attacks against our nation began long before 9/11/2001, but that day may also forever live in infamy. Unfortunately the heightened awareness that resulted from that attack has diminished immensely and we, as a nation, are slipping back into that comfortable complacent zone.

A fitting tribute to the 9/11 victims might be to make a commitment to learn more about preparedness in general. For example...

-- What would you do if a dirty bomb went off near your place of business?

-- Where would you go if you were told to evacuate for days, weeks or months?

-- Did you know if a small nuclear device detonates several miles away that you could increase your chances of survival by taking shelter with the proper shielding materials around you? (Taking shelter below ground can reduce exposure to deadly gamma rays by 90%, but it is critical you have proper shielding around you and stay put for several hours, days or weeks since you can’t see, smell, feel or taste radiation.)

Discussing terrorism and preparedness is not fear-mongering (as we are sometimes accused of doing with our book) rather it is educational and hopefully beneficial. The thought of a chemical, biological or nuclear attack (or any major disaster) can be overwhelming, but people need to acknowledge the threats exist and prepare for the unexpected. Bill and I repeatedly say … if more people would learn what to do before, during and after many types of emergencies and disasters it could alleviate anxiety, fear and problems. First Responders may be completely overwhelmed during a crisis so businesses and citizens should take responsibility and prepare and plan for many types of scenarios.

September is National Preparedness Month. Please consider getting involved with your local community to learn more about preparedness, crime prevention and response.

And please … never forget the sacrifices many responders and volunteers gave so willingly on that day … and everyday.
